Ulysses Davis is an African American artist who specializes in wood sculpture. He is well known in the Savannah Area where he produced many of his works. He owned a barber shop which doubled as his studio where he practiced his self-taught woodworking skills. Davis’s works resemble the deeper cultural history of Savannah in the form of art which is so admiring. A majority of his works is displayed in the Beach Institute here in Savannah which I visited and was drawn to this specific sculpture he made for his wife.
The composition in this piece is what drew me in, as well as the small jewels within the sculpture. It was the only sculpture that had a pop of color. This inspired me to see this composition in a colorful sense by recreating it with metalwork embroidery.
